Evidence for effective action

To make best use of limited resources, it is vital that action on preventing childhood accidents is based on evidence of what works. We have therefore developed close ties with the UK’s leading researchers into accident prevention, helping to link research and practice.

  • We are part of a research consortia evaluating the Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative, a major Department for Transport programme designed to reduce road casualties in disadvantaged areas. This work is being led by the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London, with researchers from the universities of Surrey, Swansea and the West of England.
  • We were involved in a recently-completed research project, led by Nottingham University, that was evaluating the role of thermostatic mixing valves in preventing serious bath water scalds.
  • We worked on a research project, led by Swansea University, to evaluate the responses of local authority councillors to information on improving child road safety.
  • We participate in the Miskin Group, which brings together accident prevention researchers from across the UK.
  • We are members of the programme development group of NICE that is developing strategies, policies and national programmes to prevent unintentional injuries among children and young people aged under 15.
  • We sit on the editorial board of the international journal Injury Prevention. We contribute regular briefings and ensure that organisations in the UK stay abreast of developments in child accident prevention worldwide.
  • We are a member of the national organising committee for Safety 2010, the 10th world conference on injury prevention and safety promotion.
